We will analyse events in the United Kingdom and in its ever-expanding empire. Throughout most of the 19th century, Great Britain was victorious in her wars. Most of the century saw various wars of conquest and a dreadful failure at home by the government to deal with the Irish potato famine mid-century. In India, the Indian Mutiny was repressed with great cruelty. The Industrial Revolution saw sail give way to coal and iron ships but also the abuse of children sent down the mines and under machinery in the textile industry. Marx was convinced that the revolution would break out in England in 1848 and was most surprised when it took place on the Continent. The gradual introduction of universal male suffrage and the rise of the Trade Unions and of the Labour party at the end of the century saw Great Britain ready to face the 20th century with optimism and patriotism.
